Il Palazzo Experimental
During the 60th Biennale in Venice this year, Il Palazzo Experimental will showcase works by leading artists from the collection UK-based environmental arts charity Platform Earth.
The exhibition titled ‘CARBON II’ includes works by Marina Abramović, Rachel Whiteread, Mark Wallinger, Jonathan Yeo and Emily Young. Curated by Nadja Romain (Lo Studio), Petroc Sesti (Platform Earth) and Richard Wadhams (Artists First Management) aims to create a dialogue between Venice and its Lagoon, as well as the local and international art scene.
Since it opened its doors in 2019, the Experimental has distinguished itself as a beloved hangout spot for Venetians and visitors alike. The works will be shown on the hotel’s piano nobile overlooking Giudecca through its Gothic windows, as well as in the beautiful sculpture garden providing respite away from the hustle and bustle of the Zattere. The exhibition hopes to draw international environmentalists, collectors and artists together behind Platform Earth’s mission for environmental restoration and cultural preservation.
Many of the artworks will be available for sale, with proceeds raised going towards a vital marine restoration project in Venice’s lagoon designed by the charity and delivered by local partners: Laura Onofri (Università di Padova), Andrea D’Alpaos (Università di Padova) and Adriano Sfriso (Ca’ Foscari). Platform Earth’s commitment to environmental revitalisation and ecological restoration aims to conserve the city’s biodiverse network of lagoons, beautiful natural landscape and rich cultural heritage for generations to come.
As an artist-led environmental arts charity, Platform Earth creates exhibitions and cultural events as spaces of heightened meaning, where artists can engage creatively with the complex and existential nature of the climate crisis. Providing a foundation for artists to meaningfully engage with the climate crisis lies at the heart of Platform Earth’s curatorial vision, which aims to catalyse the symbolic, physical and economic power of art to enable change.
The leading arts collective takes carbon sequestration as both a conceptual thread and practical goal of its cultural projects through the pioneering use of innovative carbon-negative materials in art. Platform Earth encourages carbon-conscious art production through the use of pioneering materials: an ‘Air Ink’ sequestered directly from exhaust fumes, or CO2 captured in a brand new sculptural medium coined ‘CarbonXinc’ - closing the loop on art production.
‘CARBON II’ at Il Palazzo Experimental opens to the public on April 15th for a limited run during La Biennale Arte 2024. The show has been made possible from generous support from IBI Logistics, Hallett Independent, Coriander Studios and Genesis Imaging.
ABOUT PLATFORM EARTH
Platform Earth is an environmental arts charity harnessing the power of the arts to shift cultural narratives and unlock funds for marine carbon capture projects. The charity thanks its trustees Petroc Sesti (Founder & Artist), Richard Wadhams (Artists First Management), Ruth Ganesh (The Elephant Family) and Darius Sinai (LUX Magazine) for their support.
Lo Studio, in Dorsoduro, is the Venetian home of Everything I Want, a multidisciplinary art, design and craft studio/gallery founded by Nadja Romain and driven by the idea that art is a vehicle to connect people and open a path for positive change in society.
Artists First Management is a unique agency managing the professional needs of artists, galleries and art world professionals, run by Richard Wadhams.
Il Palazzo Experimental sits on the Zattere, at the crossroads for tourists and locals. Originally a Renaissance Palazzo, it has been expertly redesigned by Dorothée Meilichzon into a sophisticated stylish boutique hotel with a beautiful gallery space.
The Nolinski Hotel is a five-star luxury hotel situated on the famous shopping street of the Calle Larga, running east to west towards the Frezzeria.
Air Ink is an ink that has been developed by Graviky Labs, with MIT, from the exhaust fumes of mopeds in Delhi, India. Using a patented device, they capture and convert air pollution into a safe, high-quality ink for artists. Most works in Platform Earth’s Carbon Collection are made up of Air Ink on recycled paper.
CarbonXinc is a revolutionary new material developed in the UK that combines eco-friendly concrete and carbon capture crystals to permanently capture CO2 in rock form. Developed in a studio in Wiltshire, UK, Platform Earth has the exclusive right to CarbonXinc. Founder Petroc Sesti created the world’s first carbon sink sculpture: Heart of Okeanos, inaugurated at COP27 in Egypt and Miami Art Week.
